☀ What IS Lampwork?
☮ We get this question all the time and usually it begins with us
telling someone what we do for a living and them asking us if we really
work on lamps-no, no, no...that is not it at all!
So here is the best explanation that we have come up with:
☮ Lampworking is a type of glasswork that uses a gas fueled torch to
melt rods and tubes of clear and colored glass. Once in a molten state,
the glass is formed by blowing and shaping with tools and hand
movements.
☮ Lampworking is a type of glasswork that uses a gas fueled torch to

movements.
☮ Lampwork is the art of shaping molten glass into just about any
desired object using a torch. The torch is fueled by gas and the flame
that comes from the torch is so hot it will melt your everything off.
☮ Here is a tidbit from what Wikipedia says about lampworking:
"Lampworking is a type of glasswork that uses a gas fueled torch to
melt rods and tubes of clear and colored glass. Once in a molten state,
the glass is formed by blowing and shaping with tools and hand
movements."
☮ Lampwork is also known as torchwork or flamework.
☮ Lampworking is not the same thing as glass blowing-for the most part.
Glass blowing is done in a glory hole(a VERY large oven) and is usually
what most people think of when they hear about glass art.

☀ What are some Important Lampwork Terms YOU should know?
☮ Anneal - This is the process of properly heating and cooling the glass so that it is sturdy and doesn't break.
You want to make sure that the glass you buy-whether it be beads,
marbles, jars etc is properly kiln annealed(look for those type of
words)
☮ COE - This is the type of glass used to make whatever the object is
at hand. There is Hard Glass like that used in our marbles or jars- COE
33 which is also known as Borosilicate and Pyrex. There is also Soft
Glass like that used in our beads- COE 104 or 90/96.
☮ Bead Release - This is a substance that prevents glass from sticking
to a mandrel when we are making beads. It is sort of like hard clay.
The bead release is a bit tricky to get off the beads(or other items),
but we make sure that our beads are 99% free from bead release(also a
phrase to watch out for when buying lampwork items).
☮ You can find many more terms out there on the web-these are the 3
most used terms in our shop and it is important to us to share what
they mean.

☀ What do We do when We aren't lampworking and running a business?
☮ Well, we are the parents of 2 beautiful girls who are 9 and 5. They keep us pretty busy.
We love to do family activities and are always on the go.
Friday nights you can find us together on the couch watching movies and
eating popcorn-but on Saturday morning we are out in our yard(in the
beautiful Monzano mountains) gardening, jumping on the trampoline or
playing with the dogs.
We also like to go for hikes, road trips and other fun adventures!
During the winter we are working on indoor projects, doing crafts and reading.
☮ We have 4 pets- 2 dogs who are Rosey and Kisses and 2 Rats who are Pizza Man and Remmy.
